"The intro to AFI's "The Leaving Song Pt. II" features guitarist Jade
Puget utilizing two-hand tapping to preform an unaccompanied four bar melodic
figure. While this technique came to symbolize the playing of metal guitarists
in the Eighties, it had noble beginnings with the likes of Eddie Van Halen
in the late Seventies as simply another tool with which a guitarist could
express himself. It is in this spirit that Pudet uses the technique here.
Sure, this solo guitar melody could have been played with a pick and
only one hand on the fretboard, but with two-hand tapping, the phrase becomes
more fluid. Each note follows into the next with a much smoother attack than
that which would be achieved with a pick.
When preforming this passage, pay careful attention to the two tap-and-
slide moves, in each case making sure your tapping finger slides up to the 19th
fret without over or undershooting it."
