there is a 'haunting' sounding effect in this song.
i found something on my Zoom pedel that sounds like it.
Zoom calls it 'octive pitch'.  their discription is
"Wild and heavy lead sound with up/down octive unison".
so if you have something similar, use it.  if not, you
can do the chords in the pre-verse and whatnot with
open d in between them as shown below.  it adds a little
more fullness to the chord but doesn't quite have the same
effect.  also note that the 'haunting' pre-verse thingy
isn't in major or minor scale.  this automatically sounds 
awkward and creates dissonance.  that must be why GC chose 
to use it.  that's something you can think about when
you're writing your own creepy song.  cheers.
